GATO20.com is very pleased to be able to offer this extraordinarily rare piece from the Mid 20th Century. It is literally a piece of art which in essence is the epitomy of 20th Century Design. We believe it to be a possible prototype. We have had this piece in our possession for over a year and still have not been able to identify the exact designer. It is very apparent that it was created by one of the great designers of the time, but quite possibly a collaboration of a few. It features a bubble lamp shade (Nelson ?), a plastic coated wire/metal cage for the bulb (Bertoia / Knoll ?, Herman Miller ?), 2 iron metal painted ball tipped legs (Herman Miller? Gio Ponti ?), Biomorphic glass slab table top with raised and rounded brass fittings (Gilbert Rohde ?, Widdicomb ?, Noguchi ? Wormley ?). The conical base is made of a solid ceramic of some type ( Raymor ? ). There is "Gilbert" on the hardware which leads us to believe it is U.S. made. It is such a rare piece and has so many amazing aspects to it which match many designer styles - we can't be sure. This amazing find has some issues and it is a wonder that it still shows off its unbelievable beauty with such a delicate design of glass, ceramic and coated bubble shade. The shade has a couple of holes and a slither of a hole. Incredibly, those blemishes can't be noticed from one side even with the lamp turned on and could probably be replaced as an option. The ceramic base has a little paint loss but no cracks or broken parts. The biomorphic slab has a small area that is mostly noticeable only upon close inspection that looks like a graze to the glass, but to feel it and look closely it almost looks like it could be factory made blemish. Ultimately it does not stand out like a sore spot - and the powerfulness of the rest of the design is too amazing to really make it an issue. This fabulous design measures approximately 39 inches from side to side, 25 1/2" front to back, and a whopping 61"high! The glass slab is 17 1/4" from the floor. The bubble shade is approx. 19 1/4"x11"h. The lamp works perfectly and is powered off and on by a tulip/bell pull chain. Based on the size of the bubble shade - it too may have been an early prototype of George Nelson's design which were created in 1947 but did not go into production until 1958.
All that being said, we believe this to be an extremely rare piece that would possibly qualify as a museum design and it is available to whomever agrees. Additional pictures available upon request.
